Has Your Dog Been Seized by Durham Police?

More and more dogs are being taken from their owners across the UK because of changes in the Dangerous Dog Act (1991). The new change, put in place in 2014, means that police can now seize dogs on private property.

This doesn’t solely apply to banned dog breeds. As reported in August 2017, Durham Police seized a 10-year-old Yorkshire Terrier from a pensioner’s home. Alfie the Yorkshire Terrier (a breed typically 9 inches tall at the shoulder) supposedly chased a delivery man. The incident being reported to the police resulted in seven police officers descending upon his owner’s home to take him away.

It’s easy to see how upsetting an ordeal this would have been for Alfie’s owner, but unfortunately events like this are increasingly likely to occur. As the police continue their crackdown against reportedly dangerous dogs, it’s now more important than ever that dog owners know the full extent of the law.
